This lithograph is one of about fifty that Maillol produced in the 1920s, all of them depicting the female nude. He found lithography, which allowed him to draw directly on the stone, especially suited to producing full, softly modelled forms. The sanguine ink recalls the colour and texture of red chalk. It was the medium favoured by artists in centuries past for figure studies as it evokes the warmth of skin tones.
