The female nude was the predominant subject of Maillol’s work. In this lithograph, he heightened the contrast between light and shade through his use of lively cross-hatched lines to create a sense of volume and emphasise the body’s curves. Maillol’s interest in the classical tradition of Greek and Roman sculpture is evident here in his use of drapery. Rather than striving for anatomical accuracy, Maillol sought to convey the expressive power of the human body.
