Despite his small output, Renoir was an innovative Impressionist printmaker, regularly returning to the same motif, each time employing different techniques and tonal effects in his drive for perfection. This image is the third of three versions (the first two facing right) that he worked up. Starting with an unadorned outline, he developed the design with a succession of delicately hatched marks, seen here, describing the texture of the wall and indentations made by the woman’s head and arm on the soft pillow.
