This etching, based on an earlier painting, was commissioned in 1862 by the publisher Cadart for the first portfolio of the Société des Aquafortistes — a key publication that marked the beginning of the revival of etching as an art form. An outstanding feature of Manet’s print is his vigorous etching technique: a pattern of long lines, and short closely-hatched marks create a rich variation of light and shadow, the overall atmosphere reflecting the artist’s admiration for Spanish painting.
