Manet was deeply moved by the sight of people queuing for food during the four-month Siege of Paris in 1870 and he made it the subject of this print. The density and movement of the crowd huddled under umbrellas outside the butcher’s shop are brilliantly depicted. None of the forms are drawn with a single contour. Their shapes are only evident through the contrasting patterns of short parallel shading and blank areas of paper.

Strölin, Paris; purchased by Samuel Courtauld from Percy Moore Turner, 7 February 1934; Courtauld Gift, 1934.
