Label Text

The flattened shapes of these three cats, one black, two white, and the extreme simplicity of the design show the influence of Japanese prints. Manet’s etching may represent the initial working out of ideas for illustrations to the fourth edition of Champfleury’s book, Les Chats (1870). The isolated motifs are similar to single images of cats drawn from sketchbooks of Hokusai that were eventually used in the book.
