Manet had a close friendship with fellow painter Berthe Morisot, who acted as the model for many of his artworks. She would go on to marry his brother Eugène within months of the execution of this print. Morisot is lit vividly from the side, her expression animated by the play of strong shadows that divide her face in half. The composition is very similar to Manet’s famous portrait of her at the Musée d'Orsay, dated from the same year, which is often considered one of the highlights of his career.
Provenance
Strölin, Paris; purchased by Samuel Courtauld from Percy Moore Turner, 7 February 1934; Courtauld Gift, 1934.
