This kind of giltwood table, decorated with finely carved and stamped gesso, is most closely associated with the workshop of James Moore the elder (?1670-1726), cabinet maker to George I. The pattern of overlapping strapwork, foliage and basket weave of the table top evoke Italian Renaissance plasterwork, whilst the carved heads at the corners recall the influence of French design on the most fashionable furniture of the period.
