Commodes, or low chests of drawers, were designed to fit beneath a dado rail. The uncommonly large inlaid shells and heavy casting of the drawer handles are notable features of work produced for Gillows.
The commodes were made for the home of Sir Roger Newdigate at Arbury Hall, Warwickshire and were later owned by Samuel Courtauld.
