A solicitor who worked for the Covent Garden Theatre, Thomas Theodosius Forrest was also a talented amateur artist, specialising in landscape, who trained with George Lambert (1700-1764) and later took drawing lessons with Paul Sandby, who remained a close friend and important influence; he exhibited at the Royal Academy annually from 1762-1781.
This ambitious and highly finished view of Windsor Castle bears witness to Sandby’s influence, in terms of both subject matter and the delicate ‘stained drawing’ technique and restricted palette

Notes
The influence of Paul and Thomas Sandby is evident in Forrest’s use of watercolour, particularly in washes of colour with undefined borders.
