This small drawing is a distillation of many of Karshan’s concerns, achieving as it does a harmony of measure, weight and balance with apparent simplicity of line. It is worth noting that Karshan always signs her work on the back of the sheet so the much stronger drawing without the signature below is to be regarded as the recto and the finished work, the drawing on the verso with signature below is to be regarded as a first attempt.
