A native of Durham, George Fennell Robson (1788-1833) first began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1807. He worked primarily as a draughtsman and watercolourist and served as president of the Society of Painters in Oil and Watercolour, where he was a frequent exhibitor, from 1819-1820.
The present watercolour depicts the city of York as seen from the south, with the Minster on the horizon. It is typical of Robson’s picturesque topographical watercolours.
