Saunders made at least one painting trip to the south of France during the 1920s, following her return to figuration. This view of L’Estaque, near Marseille, is one of a small group that survives from the period. Although the flattened picture plane and tilted perspective recall her earlier work, major differences are apparent. The blazing colour of her Vorticist period has been replaced by softer tones. However, the same impulse to abstraction that runs through all her work can be seen here, more subtly.
