This study after a classical statue was acquired from the same source as Legros’s 'Study after the Venus of Milo' (D.2-14.XX.1) which is signed and dated 1855. Both sheets are also comparable in size and both show copies after classical sculptures similarly carefully executed in graphite. Thus this undated drawing was certainly executed in the same period of Legros’s career. An early date is also indicated by certain difficulties in capturing the three dimensionality of the sculpture. The drawing thus gives good evidence of the purpose of such drawings in the education of artists when copying after the Antique.
