This pen and ink drawing appears to be a copy of an etching published by David Deuchar, a printmaker and publisher active in Edinburgh in the second half of the 18th century, which is in turn a copy with variations after Rembrandt's 'Bald headed man in profile to right' (an impression of which is in the British Museum: F,6.81). Deuchar added a longer beard to Rembrandt’s original. The etching by Deuchar appeared in A Collection of Etchings after the Most Eminent Masters of the Dutch and Flemish Schools (published in Edinburgh between 1782-1803); as this drawing is on wove paper it is likely to have been made no earlier than the early 19th century, probably by a British draughtsman. There are some noticeable variations between Deuchar’s etching and the present drawing, particularly in the hatching in the background and in the inscription.
