Karshan is concerned with the fundamental qualities of draughtsmanship, namely; structure, rhythm, balance and harmony. Her practice has developed gradually over time and this drawing, along with D.2010.XX.7 demonstrate clearly how she has refined her technique which is continually evolving. Both works rely upon similar types of rhythmic mark-making. 'Untitled (6.8.2000)' offers an energetically worked field of repeated rectangular forms, structured by a central spine running down the middle of the sheet. These multiple forms give way in 'Untitled (13.10.06)' to one large drawn square of great purity and balance. At the sides of this square, the line skilfully traverses the very edges of the sheet – a perfect expression of Karshan’s belief in the importance of poise and rhythm in drawing. She refers to these particular compositions as ‘orlos’ (outlines) in reference to Alberti’s teaching that good draughtsmanship must pay particular attention to ‘the drawing of the limits’.
