Label Text

William Turner was also known as ‘Turner of Oxford’ to distinguish him from his famous contemporary J.M.W Turner. In this view of the Isis, the part of the River Thames that runs through the city of Oxford, Christ Church Meadow is shown on the right and Folly Bridge can be seen in the distance. Turner favoured extensive views. The pure blue colouring used for sky and water, and the even light throughout, suggest that this otherwise naturalistic watercolour was finished away from the motif.
