Turner made several watercolour sketches of the Domleschg Valley during his tour of Switzerland in 1843. In this view the Rhine is framed by majestic alpine scenery, dotted with castles and ruined towers. The subdued range of colours and their fluent application give the scene a contemplative quality. The small figure seated at the lower left assists the viewer in reflecting on the sublime nature of this landscape. This was one of ten works by Turner owned by the collector Dorothy Scharf (1942-2004). Following her major bequest, the Gallery now holds a collection of thirty drawings and watercolours by the artist.
