Turner based this imaginary view of Cologne on sketches made during his trip to Germany in 1817. The delicate watercolour vignette is a design for the frontispiece of the sixteenth volume of The Works of Lord Byron. This volume contains Byron’s poem Don Juan, whose protagonist passes through the city on his wanderings. Knowing that his watercolour would be reproduced in black and white, Turner rendered the scene in exceptionally fine detail that could easily be translated by the engraver’s tools.
Notes
The print after this (by E. Finden) was published in April 1833 as the frontispiece to volume XVI of Lord Byron's 'Life and Works'.
