From his earliest experiences in Shoreham, his Kentish ‘valley of vision’, Samuel Palmer was attracted by the profile of woody hills and overlapping slopes, such as those of the North Downs seen in this naturalistic view. The watercolour combines fine detail with more freely handled wash and gouache.
It is a preliminary study for a highly finished exhibition watercolour, Landscape with a Woman driving Sheep (Victorian and Albert Museum, London) – an idyllic scene that anticipates the pastoral landscapes of Palmer’s final years.
