Abbott was born in Exeter, and the surrounding scenery, including the Dart River, running between Dartmoor and Dartmouth on the South Devon coast, was a recurrent theme in his work. His drawings are often constructed of several sheets of paper joined together and a join can be seen on the left hand side of this drawing.
Abbott was a pupil of Francis Towne, and the clarity of outline and flat colour scheme in his watercolours are stylistically very similar, if somewhat brighter, to those used by Towne.
