Lear achieved great popular success with his literary ‘nonsense’ and limericks, however, he was also a highly accomplished Victorian artist. He painted a large number of landscape watercolours during his extensive travels around the Mediterranean. Produced near the Sicilian town of Calatafimi, this informal sketch is remarkable for its detailed account of the texture and colour of the rocky cliffs and outcroppings.
