This drawing was produced as part of the production process through which William Daniell made a series of soft ground etchings after portrait drawings by George Dance. Dance provided the original pencil drawings to be reproduced; Daniell then made a copy, such as this, in which he simplified and regularised Dance's more roughly sketched lines. This sheet was then placed over a copper plate prepared with a soft etching ground, and Daniell pressed through the lines of his drawing, so that when the sheet was lifted the soft ground would stick to the sheet, revealing crumbly lines of copper which could be etched and printed.
Notes
This drawing was traced from the original by George Dance, and then this copy was itself used to create a soft-ground etching, published in 'A Collection of Portraits Sketched from the Life since the year 1793 by George Dance, esq. R.A. and engraved in imitation of The Original Drawings by William Daniell, A.R.A.' in 1809 (a second vol. published in 1814). An impression of it is G.1990.WL.4165.17.
