This painting’s highly coloured irregular shapes are typical of Heron’s work from the 1970s. Although completely abstract, he was inspired by the sparse peninsular landscape of West Cornwall where he lived overlooking the ocean in a house called Eagle’s Nest. The work’s sea-like blue background, which seems to shape the coloured organic forms, is expressive of such a natural landscape. Other colours, such as the red and lime green, are less obviously naturalistic and instead contrast to give a powerful optical sensation.
