Hunter evidently liked the work of Hitchens as there are five oil paintings by the artist in the collection in addition to this work on paper. The drawing has been executed entirely in Indian ink, and it has been suggested that the dropper from the ink bottle may have supplied the drawing implement, a plausible explanation for the wide variations in the different marks on the paper.
Notes
According to a now-missing sticker, this was executed in Petworth, Sussex. In 1939 Ivon Hitchens and his wife bought 6 acres of land at Lavington Common near Petworth, Sussex. They moved there in 1940 after their house in Hampstead was bombed and he remained there until his death in 1979.
