This sheet by an artist of the Roman school, possibly copied after an engraving, shows the different orders of classical architecture seen from below. Interest in the ancient building tradition had been stimulated by the writings of the architect Sebastiano Serlio (1475-1564), who sought to reconstruct classical orders for use by Renaissance architects. The satyr’s mask included on the drawing could be used as a decorative element, such as that seen in the entablature for a rotunda at the top of the sheet.
