This drawing appears to be the only record of Francesco Cornaro's plan to erect a monument to his father, Doge Giovanni Cornaro, in the family chapel in S. Nicolò da Tolentino, Venice. Although the Doge died in 1630, the tomb was probably not planned until the completion of Bernini's masterpiece, the Cornaro chapel in S. Maria della Vittoria, Rome (for Giovanni's son Cardinal Federigo Cornaro), more than two decades later. Positioned frontally, the figure of the Doge engages directly with the viewer. The design incorporates motifs used repeatedly by Bernini, such as the door suggesting an entrance to the burial chamber and the figure of Justice (on the right) looking up at the deceased.
