Following his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor at Bologna in 1530, Charles V traveled throughout Italy and was received with lavish festivities. This drawing depicts a temporary arch which Perino del Vaga produced for the Emperor’s entry into Genoa in 1533. It celebrates Charles V as a virtuous Christian prince in the hope that he will aid Genoa and its self-proclaimed ruler Andrea Doria, admiral of the imperial navy. The allegorical friezes recall conventions of imperial triumphal entries in ancient Rome.

Provenance

possibly Pierre Crozat, Paris (1661-1740), as it is potentially one of the drawings in his estate sale, Mariette (Paris), 10 April - 13 May 1741, lot 179 (10 drawings by Giovanni da Udine, but Mariette annotated his catalogue with the note 'dont deux d'ornem, de Perin l'un represen' 'arc de triomphe à Genes pour la reception de Ch. V', one drawing known to be in Kunstbibliothek, Berlin); if so, purchased there by Marquis de Gouvernet, probably Jean de la Tour du Pin-Gouvernet (d. 1775) (9 francs for the lot); Colnaghi (London); purchased there by Anthony Blunt, London (1907-1983), 1938? (£1.10); Blunt Bequest via the Art Fund 1984
