During the Renaissance, ceramics became one of the most popular and affordable means of ornamenting a home with decorative elements. In this design a frieze shows putti sitting among discarded arms and armour. The subject may have been inspired by fresco friezes depicting Roman trophies. It might also allude to the popular theme of love overcoming war, making this design suitable for wedding ceramics.
