Degas both collected and created a large number of depictions of horses and jockeys, showing his interest in the subject. Capturing the movement of the rider and his mount seen from an unexpected viewpoint, the composition displays a deceiving effect of immediacy. The drawing is in fact a deeply pondered association of control and energy, in the motif as well as in the handling of the charcoal. Degas's feeling for volumes, achieved by the varying thickness of his line, is paralleled in the textured surface and vigorous contours of his galloping horse statuettes.
