Provenance
Nicholas Lanier, London (1588-1666), L.2886 (lower right); Jonathan Richardson, the elder, London (1667-1745), L.2984 (mount, verso, upper centre); Sir Joshua Reynolds, London (1723-1792), L.3016a (mount, verso, lower left); his estate sale, Harry Phillips (London), 5 - 22 March 1798, part of lot 1056 (mount, verso, lower left): Leo Schidlof (dealer in Vienna and Paris, London from 1946); purchased from him by Sir John Witt, London (1907-1982), L.646a (mount, verso, lower left), n.d.; John Witt Bequest via the Art Fund 1982 Richardson the elder's shelfmark on the verso may indicate this came from Padre Resta's collection via Lord John Somers, though there is no 'Resta-Somers' number on the recto (there is not always one on drawings with this provenance, see Lugt 2984). Alternatively, the shelfmark may just be Richardson's own - these marks are still not fully understood.
