Dayes was one of the most influential topographical draughtsmen of the eighteenth century. He produced numerous views of ruined ecclesiastical buildings, such as this Norman priory, which suited the British taste for picturesque ruins in this period. A rustic cottage erected against the intricately patterned façade, as well as the picturesque figure of a woman draping washing over a picket fence, illustrates how everyday life continues among ruins.

Provenance

Arthur Muschamp Robinson, Birkenhead (1837-1914); given by him to his daughter, Helena Frances Robinson (d. 1956), Christmas 1906 (and likely retained until her death, according to communication from a descendant - see Notes field and file); Corkhill and Job (Birkenhead); purchased there by J.A. Tooth (London); purchased there by Colnaghi (London) 22 January 1957; purchased there by William Wycliffe Spooner, Ilkley (1882-1967), 16 March 1959 (£80); by descent to his widow, Mrs Mary Spooner; Spooner Gift 1980
