Bonington was born in Nottingham, but moved with his family to Calais in 1817. The following year he met Louis Francia who gave him lessons in watercolour. Like his teacher, he spent some time in the 1820s painting marine subjects along the coast of Dunkerque and St-Omer. This drawing is a carefully executed but confident study of the rigging and limp sails of two boats at anchor and may have been a preparatory sketch for an oil or watercolour painting.

Notes

Patrick Noon dates this drawing to ca. 1824 (Richard Parkes Bonington: The Complete Drawings, 2011, no. 180.)
