The drawing is one of his eight known studies of women engaged in domestic pursuits, a rare genre in the Renaissance. The large scale and high degree of finish suggest that it may have been made for a collector. The detailed application of white opaque watercolour recalls the visual quality of Parmigianino’s coloured woodcuts. The artist’s decision to develop the drawing into an etching (G.1978.PG.40) shows him responding to demand for his work, which through prints could be disseminated more easily.

Provenance

William Coningham, Brighton (1815-1884), L. 476 (lower right); Dr Christian D. Ginsburg, Palmer's Green (1831-1914), L. 1145 (lower right and again on verso, upper right), his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 20-23 July 1915, lot 26 (as 'An old woman seated'); Henry Scipio Reitlinger (1885-1950); his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 9 December 1953, lot 73; purchased there by Colnaghi (London) on behalf of Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978) (£500, plus £50 commission); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
