Provenance

probably Everhard Jabach, Paris (1618-1695) (variant of L.2959 or L.2960 on verso); if so, likely purchased from his heirs by Pierre Crozat, Paris (1665-1740), L.3612 (at lower right); likely his estate sale, Mariette (Paris), 10 April - 13 May 1741 (though Py could not reconcile this drawing with any of those in Crozat's 1741 catalogue); R.P. Morris; his sale, Sotheby's (London), 27 November 1957, part of lot 34, together with D.1978.PG.93; purchased there by Baron Martin von Koblitz (1868-1961), probably on behalf of Colnaghi (London), as purchased there the same day by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978) (£150 for both); Princes Gate Bequest 1978

Inscriptions

Watermark: Watermark: Recto, right centre edge, cut off: lower half of an upright griffon or lion, 27 cm between chain lines (no exact match on Piccard or Briquet as all much wider distances between chain lines, but mark generally dated mid-14th to mid-15th centuries).

Collector's mark: Recto: lower right, written in brown ink: Pierre Crozat (L.3612). ? brown ink and red chalk scribbled on Verso, upper centre: have the appearance of Everhard Jabach's notations and paraphe (close to L.2959 and L.2960).

Inscription: Recto: lower right, brown ink, Crozat number (L.3612): "25" (is unclear to naked eye and elsewhere recorded as "35" but evident under microscope and UV).
