From 2023 display Art and Artifice: Fakes from the Collection:
When this drawing first appeared, with an art dealer in 1970, it was accepted by the leading Michelangelo experts as authentic. However, an anonymous phone call to The Courtauld in 1998 alleged this to be one of 11 works in the collection by notorious British forger Eric Hebborn. Since then, opinions on its authenticity have been divided.
Infrared photography has now revealed a drawing on the back of this sheet, which will hopefully aid ongoing research into the authorship of this drawing.

Notes
The drawing is laid down on a historic mount, but transmitted light shows that a pen-and-ink drawing is hidden on the verso (see image above). A photograph taken with transmitted light and infrared combined (see above) reveals more of the hidden lines, and this photograph was run through a programme to eliminate the interference from the ink lines on the front of the drawing to try and discern this hidden drawing even more clearly (see third technical image above).
Provenance
Madame P. Finkilmann (according to Mystery Dossier report in file); purchased from her by Colnaghi (London) 27 October 1970; purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 4 December 1970 (£32,000); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
