From 2016 display Regarding Drawings:
Claude was one of the first artists to advocate a dedicated practice of drawing from nature, and this broadly handled study of a clump of trees, probably drawn near Tivoli, is typical of his sensitive attention to his surroundings. He seems to have begun this drawing simply as a study of the trees, and only later decided to turn it into a landscape. The strip of ground at the bottom has been added as a wash that covers the bases of the trunks. (label from 'Regarding Trees')

Inscriptions
Watermark: Watermark: centre: circle containing a bird in profile on top of three mounts, a small letter beside the mounts - possibly "C" or "D" (no match in Heawood, Piccard, Briquet or Churchill. The Morgan has a Claude drawing with a similar watermark, III, 77).
Collector's mark: Recto: lower right, stamped in brown: Charles Morin (L.597). Mount (removed, now in file): Verso: centre, stamped in black: unidentified, an oval containing a crown and possibly a unicorn, but the mark has been intentionally abraded; lower right, stamped in black: stamped indistinctly and thus not clear, similar to that of Leo Franklyn (L.1454a) though the 'L' is not as long as reproduced by Lugt, but as Leo Franklyn advertised this drawing for sale in 1958, seems likely to be his mark.
Inscription: Verso: lower centre, brown ink, signed and dated by the artist: "Claude Salle - IV - / Roma 1650" [the "5" written over a "6"].
