The Dutch artist Jongkind was an important precursor of the Impressionists. This fresh watercolour dates from 1861 when he visited the Nivernais, a region south of Paris. Painted in a restricted palette of blues and vivid greens, the division of the composition into distinct bands is characteristic of his work in this period. It is not preparatory for any known painting and appears to have been created as a work of art in its own right.

Notes

The landscape is identifiable as the Nivernais, the region surrounding Nevers, c. 125m south-east of Paris. The artist first visited the area between 19 August - 8 October 1861; therefore the date he inscribed here of June is incorrect, which was not unusual for Jongkind, as such confusion over dates appears on several of his works.

Provenance

Mrs Erszi Ferenczy, Budapest (c. 1904-2000) by April 1961 [date of first correspondence from Lessner to Seilern regarding the drawing]; purchased from her via Franz Lessner, Vienna, by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), March 1964 (£1,000); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
