Inscriptions

Watermark: Recto, upper centre: "L B" (formed with single lines, centred between the chain lines which are 2.5 cm apart; matches WIRE database Countermark L,Lb.a.a., countermark to Foolscap with five-pointed collar, K.a. This paper is datable to c.1629-c.1653. See Erik Hinterding, Rembrandt as an Etcher, 2006, II, 82 for list of prints by Rembrandt bearing this watermark).

Inscription: Verso: centre, graphite: “91 x 16.4”; lower left, graphite, von Wurzbach's hand: “a/b / aw 1900 [variant of L.203] / Coll. Klinkosch [Klinkosch’s mark L.577 is not present, perhaps was on a former frame or mount and since removed?] / (Rembrandt)." and below that in William Clarke's (former Courtuald conservator) hand: "Wurzbach (L.2587)”; lower left, on a separate label adhered to the corner, stencil printed in black ink but second number abraded: “3[1?]”; lower right corner, graphite: illegible mark.
