This rapidly drawn figure reveals Rembrandt’s mastery in the use of pen and ink. Despite the looseness and urgency of the lines, the man’s body and pose are precisely captured, as is the attentive expression of his upturned face. Stylistically, this study belongs to a small group of pen drawings connected to a painting depicting the Preaching of St. John and was probably executed as a preparatory study for an attentive member of the Baptist’s audience.
