Rather than indicating areas of shadow, dark smudges of ink around the standing figure here accentuate the outer contours of the body, almost giving an impression of three-dimensional relief. The figure has been identified as Rembrandt’s wife Saskia, who often served as a model for the artist. Although the use of thick lines throughout, with squiggle-like flourishes, is not typical of Rembrandt’s drawing style in the 1630s, it is not unknown in his oeuvre.
