This drawing was one of 11 claimed in an anonymous phone call to the museum to be by notorious forger Eric Hebborn (1934–1996). It was purchased as an authentic drawing by Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck, with the stamp of famed collector Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774) in the lower left corner lending it credibility. Recent doubts have been raised about the quality of the draughtsmanship and authenticity of the stamp, and the paper border of the mount appears to have machine-made features that would post-date Mariette’s death.

Provenance
Pierre-Jean Mariette, Paris (1694-1774), L.2097; possibly his estate sale, Basan (Paris), 15 November 1775 - 30 January 1776, part of lot 914 [Rosenberg and Choueiry's 2022 catalogue said this drawing could be not be identified with any particular lot]; if part of lot 914, purchased there by Lenoir (Paris) (47 livres 19 sols); Dr. E. Shapiro; sold by Shapiro at Sotheby's (London), 26 June 1969, part of lot 186 (with 3 other drawings); purchased there by Yvonne Tan Bunzl (London) (£4,200); purchased from her by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 14 July 1969 (£4,050); Princes Gate Bequest 1978

Details his embarrassment at missing that this drawing had a Mariette mark and put it an afternoon sale at Sotheby's in 1963 (usually afternoon was for lesser drawings). Hans Calmann and Yvonne Bunzl were bidding against each other for it, and though Yvonne spent her full budget on this one drawing, she made a small profit when she sold it to Count Seilern. Day incorrectly recalls the sale on 1963 but it was in 1969.
