Provenance
possibly acquired directly from the Tiepolo studio by Armand Louis François de Mestral de Saint-Saphorin (1738-1806) while serving as ambassador in Madrid; by descent to his heirs; acquired from them (in return for his assistance in dividing the collection between family members) by Dr Ferdinand de Cérenville; by descent to his sons Édouard and René Cérenville, Lausanne (1875-1968); acquired from them by Nathan Chaikin; purchased from him by Colnaghi (London), 20 June 1960; purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978), 27 June 1960 (£1,500); Princes Gate Bequest 1978 NB: This drawing was claimed in 1998 by an anonymous phone call to be a Hebborn fake, but based on the above provenance, it seems highly unlikely.
