This spirited drawing is a compositional study for Parmigianino’s painting of the Conversion of Saul (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), which illustrates a biblical episode. The Jewish commander Saul is dramatically struck from his horse while on his way to Damascus. The startled animal rears up on its hind legs at the sight of a heavenly apparition not shown in the drawing.

Executed while Parmigianino was living in Bologna, the painting allows us to date this drawing to 1527-29. The composition was rapidly sketched in black chalk using broad hatching with numerous changes which suggest that he was exploring solutions for the painting’s final design.

Provenance

J. Du Pan (L.1440 (lower left); possibly his estate sale, Bonnefans (Paris), 26 - 29 March 1840, lot 520 ('Un Cavalier renversé de cheval, esquisse au crayon'); unidentified collector, possibly Benjamin Fillon, Saint Cyr (1819-1881) [though not listed in his 1882 sale catalogue], L.967 (lower left); Dr Carl Robert Rudolf, London (1884-1974), by 1962 [when exhibited as in his collection]; purchased from him via Colnaghi (London) by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 25 January 1963 (£2,000); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
