This drawing can be identified as one of the numerous studies executed by Parmigianino in preparation for his etching of the Entombment of Christ. Here, the artist studied the group of figures supporting the mother of Christ as she faints at the sepulchre.
Parmigianino’s primary interest in this drawing was to explore the emotional quality of the narrative through a dramatic composition. Using swift, yet carefully placed strokes of red chalk, he imbued a poignant subject with great intensity.

Provenance
Pierre Crozat, Paris (1665-1740), L.3612 (lower right) [Bernadette Py could not reconcile this drawing with any of those listed in Crozat's 1772 catalogue]; William Young Ottley, London (1771-1836) [according to Sotheby's, who sold it on Ottley's mount; does not match any Parmigianino drawings in Ottley's 1814 sale, though page 144 missing from online scanned catalogue, which according to a Popham letter in file for D.1978.PG.361, did have Parmigianinos]; Dr and Mrs Victor Bloch, London; their sale, Sotheby's (London), 12 November 1964, lot 52; purchased there by Colnaghi (London) on behalf of Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978); Princes Gate Bequest 1978

Inscriptions
Watermark: Watermark: none.
Collector's mark: Recto: lower right corner, written in brown ink: Pierre Crozat (L.3612).
Inscription: Recto: lower right corner, brown ink, Crozat number (L.3612): "102 [?]" [the number is unclear but 101 and 107 are already accounted for by Bernadette Py in Crozat's inventory, see her catalogue on the Louvre website; under UV it looks more like 103, but again this appears on another drawing now in the Louvre, INV 8540. Popham and Gnann suggested it could also be 182, which Py's catalogue does not list as assigned to any known drawings]. Verso: upper left corner, brown ink: a symbol – “P” crossed by two horizontal bars (not found on Lugt).
