Parmigianino executed this drawing while living in Rome (1524-27). There he would have seen the facades of buildings recently painted with episodes of ancient Roman history and myths.
The figures’ clothing in this drawing is probably inspired by the drapery style employed in such mural paintings. This work offers precious evidence of the artist’s creative interpretation of antiquity through the lens of contemporary Roman painting.
