This is the earliest drawing in The Courtauld’s collection. Stefano di Giovanni was the leading artist of the International Gothic style in Verona and was one of the first to fully exploit the potential for spontaneity of pen and ink on paper.

The Courtauld’s fragment is part of a large and mutilated sheet; the other, larger part is in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Both compositions are likely variations of The Education of the Virgin, featuring Saint Anne and the young Virgin Mary. The method of shading against the contours of the figures and the vigorous use of hatching are typical of Stefano’s lively penmanship.

Provenance

Mr Grill, France (according to inscription in French on former backing support, now in object file, attributing the drawing to Ludovico Carracci); W. Wightman; purchased from him by Colnaghi (London), 17 August 1959; purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern, Londo (1901-1978), 18 November 1959 (£500); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
