Provenance

probably Helene de Beer, London (1898-1984); purchased from her by Colnaghi (London), 22 July 1957; purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 26 June 1958 (£50); Princes Gate Bequest 1978 An oddity in the Colnaghi archive books: this drawing is inscribed with Colnaghi inv. no. A.22275, but in the Colnaghi books that drawing is listed as ‘Earl of Dunmore. Soure River Hudson Bay River Territory, watercolour, 9 x 13 ½ inches'. However, the purchase price and date are correct for PG.321, and we have the invoice that lists all of the drawings Seilern bought on 27 June 1958 – there is no drawing by Earl of Dunmore, but there is this drawing, which at the time was thought to be by Jan Brueghel the elder. I am therefore tentative to accept that this drawing was purchased from Mrs de Beer, as the archive book says, as there must have been a mix-up with another drawing.
