The effortless relationship between the initial pencil sketch and the colour composition lend a particularly lively appearance to this late, freshly preserved watercolour study. Generous curved lines in the foreground indicate a path in a grove of trees leading to a summarily described and still unidentified statue. Cézanne’s concern was the vivid matrix of touches of various hues of purple, blue and green bound together by the light paper, which helps to give the work its luminous quality.

Provenance

by descent to the artist's son, Paul Cézanne, Paris (1872-1947); probably purchased from him by Paul Guillaume (Paris) and purchased from him by Sir Kenneth Clark, London (1903-1983), 1933 (£250, with about 50 others; see Clark's autobiography, 'Another part of the wood', 1974, p. 240); purchased from him by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 3 September 1941 (£500); Princes Gate Bequest 1978 Much of the literature, starting with Venturi, lists Ambroise Vollard as the first owner of this drawing, but it is unclear if there is any evidence for that or whether it was just an assumption. It is also just an assumption that Clark acquired this from Guillaume, though it seems the most likely source. However, in Clark's correspondence with Seilern he only said that he acquired this drawing in exchange for a Degas, which makes it seem that it was not actually part of the bundle of 50 drawings for £250 and was a separate transaction.
