Label Text

Pissarro made hundreds of sketches, which provided him with motifs for paintings and woodcuts. This spontaneous yet conscientiously composed study may be connected to a gouache and a watercolour of 1885 depicting a farmer’s market at the small town of Gisors. By choosing a low viewpoint, and by showing most figures from the back, the artist lets the viewer participate in the lively atmosphere of the busy market, attended mainly by women, who crowd around an unknown object of desire.
